What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a treatment that uses very fine needles to create thousands of controlled microchannels within the skin.
These tiny, precisely created channels stimulate the skin’s natural repair response, supporting processes involved in collagen and elastin production and the renewal of the treated skin.
The result can be skin that looks smoother, brighter and firmer, with improvements in overall texture, tone and skin quality developing over time. Depending on the concern being treated, microneedling can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines, visible pores, acne scarring and selected pigmentation concerns.
By adjusting factors such as treatment depth, speed and technique, the treatment can be adapted to different areas and individual goals.
Microneedling can also be combined with carefully selected formulations applied during treatment, allowing the protocol to be tailored further to your skin.

Not all microneedling is the same.
The principle behind microneedling may sound simple, but the device, needle movement, treatment depth, cartridge design, technique and products used alongside treatment all matter.
I chose Dermapen 4 because I wanted Milner Aesthetics to offer microneedling using an established professional platform that gives me precise control over how treatment is delivered.
Dermapen 4 uses a professional 16-needle cartridge, adjustable treatment depths, multiple speed settings and a dedicated scar-treatment setting. It also incorporates specific anti-contamination features designed for professional use.
That control allows me to tailor treatment to the individual rather than apply the same protocol to every patient.

New treatments and technologies appear in aesthetics constantly. Being new or popular does not automatically make something right for you.
Microneedling has a growing published evidence base across areas including facial rejuvenation and acne scarring, with research also supporting its use as part of selected hair-loss treatment pathways.
That evidence, alongside my assessment of your skin or scalp, your health, medicines and treatment goals, informs how I recommend treatment.
It also means being honest about where the evidence is still developing. Newer adjuncts, including exosome-containing formulations, are promising, but they do not yet have the same depth of independent evidence as microneedling itself.
For me, evidence-led care means explaining that difference rather than presenting every new treatment as a breakthrough.

Advanced EXO-SKIN and EXO-GROW (hair and scalp) treatments follow their own dedicated treatment protocols.

Hair thinning and changes in density can have many different causes, so treatment starts with understanding what is happening rather than assuming that every type of hair loss should be approached in the same way.
For selected concerns, Dermapen 4 microneedling can be used as part of a professional scalp treatment programme, with the approach tailored to the pattern of thinning, scalp condition and individual treatment goals.
Treatment can incorporate MG-EXO-GROW, a professional exosome-containing Meso-Glide developed specifically for hair and scalp protocols. Its formulation combines exosome technology with hyaluronic acid, proteins, peptide and ceramide complexes, amino acids, plant-derived exosomes, vitamins and minerals.
MG-EXO-GROW has been developed to support scalp health, hair density and the appearance of thinning hair, bringing exosome technology into a professional Dermapen 4 treatment protocol.
Exosome-based hair treatments remain a developing area and the clinical evidence continues to evolve. Microneedling itself has also been studied in selected forms of hair loss, particularly androgenetic alopecia, although treatment response and the strength of evidence vary according to the protocol being used.
Where the pattern of hair loss suggests that medical investigation or a different treatment approach may be more appropriate, this will be discussed as part of your assessment.

A single treatment may be appropriate in some circumstances. For progressive improvement, a course of three treatments is often recommended, usually around 4–6 weeks apart.
